Refurbished An124 production facilities?
There is a piece over on Flight Global that refers to OAK refurbishing the An124 production facilities in the Aviastar factory in Ulyanovsk.
Restarting production of the An124 is a long held dream of various individuals in the industry. Further presentations at ILA indicate that the wishes of the two major operators in the business, Volga Dnepr and Antonov have already reached agreement in principle with Motor Sich the engine manufacturer on whom so much would depend for the engine performance requirements. The emergence of OAK representing the consolidation of the Russian aviation industry provides a management and financial structure through which the wishlists of the Russian and Ukrainian governments can be put into practice.
The upgraded aircraft, to be known as the An-124-150, would incorporate a a glass cockpit that would allow the flight crew to be reduced from six to four. Major improvements in the aircraft's engines, along with airframe improvements would be the major factor increasing the payload. Digital brake control, and improved thrust reversers would also be included in the package.
The 124-150 will have a maximum lift capacity of 150 metric tons, compared to 120 tons for the current aircraft. Although the current civil payload of 120t is limited only by the performance of the aircraft rather than the structure. The original airframe was originally released to 150tons in military service.Â
Volga Dnepr talked of requiring a further 4 or 5 aircraft now and the possibility of demand for the type doubling over the coming years and a possible cost of $100-$120 million although no-one was prepared to talk real numbers. However, one wonders how the economics of the type will stack up when it has to operate at high utilisation levels in order to offset the dramatically increased acquisition cost.
