The long held dream of Volga Dnepr to restart production of the An124-100 has suffered something of a setback recently as reported by ITAR-TASS.

It seems that the project could be delayed for one or two years due to the global economic situation (should the project ever have had a starting point from which to be delayed).  The announcement came from Dmitry Romanov, investments and external relations minister of Russia’s Ulyanovsk Region, at a news conference on Thursday.

It seems that the struggle by Antonov Design Bureau and the Ukrainian Government to keep the An70 project alive continues.Â

It is more than 7 years since an independent review by the German government concluded that the An70 was "operationally, technically and financially" by far the best buy for the German military. However, nothing was going to derail the European politico/military/industrial complex in its plans for the A400M and the An70, the most advanced military airlifter of it's day, was left on the sidelines.

Restarting production of the An124 is a long held dream of various individuals in the industry. Further presentations at ILA indicate that the wishes of the two major operators in the business, Volga Dnepr and Antonov have already reached agreement in principle with Motor Sich the engine manufacturer on whom so much would depend for the engine performance requirements. The emergence of OAK representing the consolidation of the Russian aviation industry provides a management and financial structure through which the wishlists of the Russian and Ukrainian governments can be put into practice.
